Who brings what.
Who paid for what.

HamJoli is one app for a circle of friends. Its first mini-app plans a trip: a packing list everyone ticks, the people coming (even the one who has not installed it yet), and expenses that settle themselves.

हमजोली, said hum-JOH-lee: Hindi and Urdu for a companion, a friend your own age. Works offline. No passwords.

How it works

A weekend, start to settled.

The same four screens, in the order a trip actually happens.

One trip, one screen. The plan screen on iPhone.
A list that knows who. The pack screen on iPhone.
Split with whoever it was for. The pay screen on iPhone.
The fewest payments that end it. The settle screen on iPhone.
  1. 01Plan

    One trip, one screen.

Name it, pick the days, pick the currency. Add the people by name, including the friend who has not installed anything yet; they claim their seat when they join from the invite link.

  2. 02Pack

    A list that knows who.

Every item is for someone, or for everyone. Everyone items are ticked per person, so sunscreen shows 3 of 4 packed instead of pretending one tick is enough. Filter by person or by carry, buy, prepare, at the venue.

  3. 03Pay

Split with whoever it was for.

Boat rental for everyone. Dinner for the three who stayed. Equal split to the cent, with the odd cent handed out the same way on every phone, so no two devices ever disagree by a penny.

  4. 04Settle

The fewest payments that end it.

Balances sum to zero by construction. Settle-up suggests who pays whom in as few transfers as the maths allows, and recording one just writes it in the ledger.

iPhone, iPad and Mac

One app. Every screen you own.

The same trip on the phone in your pocket, the iPad on the kitchen table and the Mac at your desk. Light and dark follow the system, so do the screenshots on this page.

Expenses

Type the amount. The rest is arithmetic.

Pick who paid and who it was for. Shares are equal to the cent, the odd cent goes to the first sharers by id, balances sum to zero, and settle-up finds the fewest transfers. This is the app's own rule, running here.

Change anything below and the ledger, balances and settle-up recompute.

One link brings a friend in. Even before they have the app.

Add Maya by name today and give her things to carry. Send her the trip's invite link whenever. When she installs HamJoli and taps it, she claims her seat and everything assigned to her is already hers. She signs in with her email: no password, no phone number.

An invite link carries the server, the trip and the trip's secret key. Whoever has it is in, so share it like a house key.

        Offline first

No signal on the ghat road. Nothing stops.

Every trip is a log of small changes kept on your phone. Ticks and edits land at once, queue while you are offline, and merge when you are back, in the same order on every device. Turn off the network below and keep ticking.

        Yours

Your trip stays between your friends.

          Just your email

You sign in with a code sent to your email. No password to forget, and the same trips on every device you own.

        • 02

          Your own server

The sync server is one small binary with a SQLite file. Run it on a Mac at home or a tiny VPS; your friends never see a URL, the invite link carries it.

        • 03

The server never reads a trip

It stores changes and checks who may read them. Every rule about items, splits and balances runs on the phones, so an offline phone and the server always agree.

        • 04

          Nothing else phones home

No analytics, no crash reporter, no third-party SDK in the app. This website has no tracker either; the fonts are served from here.

        One app, many small ones

Trips is the first tile. The home screen has room.

HamJoli is a launcher for small utilities a circle of friends shares. Each mini-app is its own package with its own tile; the shell gives it the people, the sync and the home screen. The next ones are sketched, not promised.

        Start a list

Say where you are going. Get the first draft.

Describe the trip in a sentence. You get a starter packing list in the app's own shape: carry, buy, prepare, at the venue, with the everyone items marked. It runs here in your browser; nothing you type leaves this page.

        Questions

        The short answers.

The long ones are on the FAQ page.

        Is it free?

Yes. It is free during the TestFlight beta and stays free when it reaches the App Store. There is no plan to charge the people you invite.

        What do I need?

An iPhone, iPad or Mac on iOS 26, iPadOS 26 or macOS 26, and the app: from the App Store once it is released, and until then through the TestFlight app with the public link from this site (/download always goes to the right one). One person in the circle also needs somewhere to run the sync server; see the question on servers.

Do my friends need the app to be on the trip?

No. Add anyone by name as a placeholder, give them items to carry and include them in expenses. When they install the app and open the invite link, they claim that seat and everything assigned to them comes with it.

Who needs a server, and why?

The circle’s trips sync through one small server that a member runs: a single binary with a SQLite file, on a Mac at home behind a tunnel or on a tiny VPS. It stores changes and checks membership, nothing more. The invite link carries its address, so nobody else ever types a URL. Running it is a few commands in the app’s runbook; most circles have one person who enjoys that.

What happens when I have no signal?

Everything keeps working. Each trip is a log of changes on your device; reads and ticks never wait for the network. Your changes queue and push when you are back, and the other devices’ changes pull in. Conflicts resolve per field, the later change wins, and every device ends up with the same trip.

        How are expenses split?

Equally, among the people you pick, in minor units (cents). If the amount does not divide evenly, the odd cent goes to the first sharers by id, the same way on every device, so no two phones ever disagree. The payer may or may not be among the sharers. Unequal splits and receipts are on the list for a later version.

        What does the name mean?

हमजोली, said hum-JOH-lee, is Hindi and Urdu for a companion: a friend your own age, one of the people you grew up running around with. Some spell it Humjoli, like the 1970 film; it is the same word.

        Who makes it

Built by one person, for the people he actually goes on trips with.

Sameer Kumar. An engineer who builds small tools for the people around him. HamJoli is free and stays free for friends; it exists because packing lists live in a chat thread and nobody remembers who paid for the ice.
